This module has an intentional learning path

A fresher normally sees too many JDE codes too early. Here, each layer adds one level of complexity only after the business picture is clear.

①
Business EventA customer wants to buy something.
②
JDE TransactionThe order is entered and validated.
③
Physical MovementThe warehouse picks and ships goods.
④
BillingThe customer is invoiced.
⑤

Layer 1 · Business story

Start with what the business is trying to do

Who is buying?

Customer identity, sold-to / ship-to context and billing instructions feed the sales order.

What is being sold?

Item, branch/plant, quantity, unit of measure, location and availability matter.

At what price?

Base price is a standard starting point. Pricing hierarchy, UOM, currency and effective dates can determine what JDE returns.

Think beyond the ERP screen

One sales order crosses several teams.

Customer service enters it. Inventory must support it. Warehouse executes it. Shipping confirms it. Billing invoices it. Finance receives the downstream impact.

Layer 5 · Process control

Why Last Status / Next Status matters

Oracle-documented example milestones

Order Activity Rules govern which operations are valid for a sales-order line. Oracle examples include these milestones in a standard sequence.

520Enter Sales Order
→
540Print Pick Slip

Do not memorise one universal status chain.

Order Activity Rules are configured around the order type + line type combination. Clients can have additional or alternate valid steps. The consultant skill is to read the configured rule, not assume every environment behaves identically.

P40204 · Order Activity Rules

A critical place to understand permitted progression for the applicable order type and line type.

Your first diagnostic question

“What are the line's Last Status and Next Status?” That single question often tells you which part of the process to inspect next.

Enterprise Automation makes the process visible.

Oracle documents Enterprise Automation pages for Sales Order Management with process-flow tiles, Watchlists and KPI links. The same Order-to-Cash thinking you learned above can be surfaced as a guided process experience rather than isolated menu navigation.

Process tiles — jump into the relevant application from the business flow.
Watchlists — expose counts such as orders on hold or late orders.
Warehouse flow — Oracle also documents a warehouse-aware Order-to-Cash variant with picking and pick confirmation.
Process Modeler templates — recent 9.2 documentation includes Enterprise Process Model templates for Order-to-Cash analysis.

Layer 0 · Finance landscape

Finance is a connected system, not just G/L

Oracle's JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Financial Management includes General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and several additional finance capabilities. For a fresher, the strongest starting point is to see how AP and AR feed accounting records that ultimately become posted balances.

💸 Accounts Payable

Supplier invoice → voucher → liability → payment.

📄 Accounts Receivable

Customer invoice → receivable → receipt → settlement.

G/LFinancial core

📊 General Accounting

Journal entries, posting, balances, reporting and integrity.

⚙️ AAIs + Setup

Configuration helps JDE determine which accounts should receive automatic entries.

Freshers' mental model: transaction applications create detailed records. Posting validates those records and updates account balances. Reports only become trustworthy when you understand that path.
Layer 1 · Chart of Accounts

Business Unit.Object.Subsidiary = Where + What

Oracle documents Business Unit.Object.Subsidiary as the standard JD Edwards EnterpriseOne account format. Click each part of the example below.

F0901 · Account Master

Stores account master information. P0901 is used to review and revise account setup.

F0911 · Account Ledger

Stores transaction-level accounting detail. Think “what happened?”

F0902 · Account Balances

Stores posted account balances. Think “what is the summarized balance?”

Layer 2 · General Ledger mechanics

Click through Journal Entry → Post → Balance

Key Oracle behaviour: P0911 creates an unposted journal entry in F0911. R09801 selects approved, unposted transactions, validates them, posts accepted transactions to F0902, marks F0911 detail as posted and changes the batch to posted.
Layer 3 · Object explorer

Which Finance object answers which question?

Layer 4 · Automatic Accounting Instructions

AAIs are the routing logic behind automatic entries

Business transaction

A voucher, invoice or receipt needs an accounting entry. The transaction provides company, G/L offset and other context.

JDE looks for accounting instructions

AAI

AAIs map system events to accounts in the Chart of Accounts.

PC · A/P TradeRC · A/R TradeRB · A/R Bank

G/L Account

JDE uses the applicable company and AAI configuration to derive the account. Company 00000 can provide defaults in documented hierarchies.

AAI ≠ transaction

An AAI is setup logic. F0911 is transaction detail. F0902 is posted balance. Keeping those roles separate prevents a lot of beginner confusion.

Configuration hierarchy matters

Oracle documents company-specific and default-company logic for various AAIs. The exact item used depends on the subsystem and transaction.

Layer 5 · Accounts Payable

Supplier invoice → Voucher → Payment

Oracle documents P0411 as the Standard Voucher Entry program. A standard voucher creates A/P information in F0411 and G/L detail in F0911; posting updates F0902 and creates the A/P liability offset using AAIs.

Supplier invoiceBusiness eventSupplier must exist in Address Book / Supplier Master.

Useful consultant question: “Is the voucher entered, posted, approved for payment, or already in a payment group?” Those are different process states.
Layer 6 · Accounts Receivable

Customer invoice → Receivable → Receipt

For manually entered A/R invoices, Oracle documents P03B11 as Standard Invoice Entry. The invoice is stored in F03B11 and corresponding G/L detail is created in F0911. Standard Receipts Entry P03B102 creates receipt header/detail records in F03B13/F03B14.

F03B13 · Receipts Header

Stores receipt-level information such as receipt amount, check number and receipt / G/L dates.

F03B14 · Receipts Detail

Stores how receipt amounts are applied to invoices. One receipt can have detail against multiple invoices.

Layer 7 · Month-end lens

Before trusting a report, understand the control points

01

Unposted transactions

Review whether accounting transactions remain unposted in F0911 or subsystem batches.

02

Post errors

R09801 validates transactions; errors must be corrected before accepted transactions update balances.

03

Ledger integrity

Oracle provides integrity tools to compare transactions, account masters and account balances.

04

Reporting structure

Chart-of-accounts design, levels of detail, posting edit codes and account order affect reliable financial reporting.

Financial documents and calculator
Finance consultant mindset

“The report is wrong” is not the first diagnosis.

First prove the transaction, its account, its posting status and whether the balance table reflects it. Then move outward to reporting logic.

Layer 0 · Manufacturing landscape

What is JD Edwards manufacturing managing?

Oracle describes manufacturing work orders as requests to complete a quantity of an item. A work order combines a header, parts list and routing instructions. The parts list defines materials; the routing describes operations and resources.

🧩

Product Data Management

Manufacturing item structure, Bill of Material, routing and work centers.

🏭

Shop Floor Management

Manufacturing work orders, parts lists, material issues, labor reporting and completions.

📊

Manufacturing Accounting

Tracks production costs, work in process and manufacturing journal entries according to configuration.

Freshers' mental model: A manufacturing work order answers three questions: what to make (header), what materials it needs (parts list), and how to make it (routing).
Layer 1 · Product data

BOM is not the same as Routing

Illustrative example: manufacture 10 assembled desk lamps. These quantities and operations are learning examples, not Oracle sample master data.

Master Bill of Material · P3002 / F3002

How is the product made?

Operation 10 · AssembleWork Center A
Operation 20 · TestWork Center B
Operation 30 · PackWork Center C
Work Center SetupP3006 / F30006

Master vs Work Order copy

F3002/F3003 are master-level product data. After order processing or manual attachment, a particular work order has its own F3111 parts list and F3112 routing.

Quantity interpretation

The example uses one unit of each component per finished lamp. Real bills can include component-specific quantities, scrap factors, effectivity and other rules.

Layer 2 · Interactive work-order journey

Click each manufacturing process step

Configuration matters: R31410 can attach parts lists and routings from masters. Material issues, hours, completions and status progression depend on selected methods and processing options; this is a learning sequence, not a mandatory universal workflow.
Layer 3 · Verified reference

Program & table explorer

Search by object number, business purpose or table. The role of each object is grounded in the Oracle source links at the end of this module.

Layer 4 · Shop-floor recording

Three different quantities — three different events

📦

Material Issues · P31113

Issues components to the work order. Oracle documents inventory issue transactions in Item Ledger F4111 and issue quantities on the work order parts list.

⏱️

Hours & Quantities · P311221

Records work-order labor and production-operation quantities in F31122. R31422 can update the work-order routing F3112.

✅

Completions · P31114

Records finished quantity into inventory. Oracle supports partial or full work-order completions, depending on process.

Common confusion: Reporting 10 hours on a work order does not by itself mean 10 finished units are in inventory. Labor reporting, material issue and finished-goods completion are distinct transactions.

Super Backflush · P31123

Oracle documents a configured alternative for reporting materials, labor and completions through operations/pay points. This is not the same as ordinary manual work order entry.

Do not treat a missing issue as harmless

If material has not been issued as expected, Oracle's manufacturing accounting documentation notes that actual variances can result when comparing issued materials against the parts list.

Layer 5 · Manufacturing accounting

How production becomes financial information

A work order can generate inventory and cost events before those events have become G/L entries. Oracle documents the manufacturing accounting path through R31802A, and the general ledger post through R09801.

①

Production activity

Issues, hours and completions create source transactions and unaccounted cost information.

②

Manufacturing Journal Entries

R31802A generates applicable accounting entries, using manufacturing accounting setup.

③

Account Ledger

Accounting entries are created in F0911. Manufacturing-related inventory transactions are also reflected in F4111.

④

General Ledger Post

R09801 posts accepted journal entries and updates Account Balances F0902.

Advanced topic: R31804 is the Variance Journal Entries program. Variances and costing treatment differ for standard vs actual costing. This is deliberately an overview, not a universal accounting recipe.

Layer 01 · The business problem

Why Inventory is the heart of operations

Imagine a distributor with 120 units of a part. The sales team promises 100 units, while the warehouse finds only 115 physically. Is the problem item setup, availability, the location balance, an unrecorded movement, or an incorrect count?

📦

What's the item?

F4101 defines the item; F4102 provides branch/plant-level context.

📍

Where is it?

F41021 stores item quantity information for a location, including lot status and G/L class.

📜

How did it move?

F4111 preserves inventory movement history. P4111 provides a standard inquiry into that history.

Think like a consultant: Item definition ≠ current stock ≠ movement history ≠ availability. These are separate questions, often answered by separate objects.
Layer 02 · Explore the data

One item, four very different questions

Click each 3D card to inspect the Oracle-documented role of the table. This distinction is fundamental to troubleshooting.

Do not confuse F0911 with F4111. F0911 is the Financials Account Ledger; F4111 is Inventory Item Ledger movement history. Same-looking numbers, different responsibilities.
Layer 03 · Interactive concepts

🔍 P41202 · Item Availability helps review on-hand, committed and available quantities.
Critical Oracle qualification: Real JDE availability is determined by your branch/plant constants and inclusion rules, including which incoming and outgoing quantities count. The calculation above is for teaching only. Never use it to validate a client's JDE availability without reviewing the configured rules.
Layer 04 · Inventory movement

Issue, transfer or adjustment? Choose carefully.

Accounting matters: Oracle documents that inventory transactions update item quantities and create the appropriate G/L entries. Transfers create entries decreasing source and increasing destination inventory. Specific accounts depend on configuration.
Layer 05 · Physical verification

Cycle counting is a controlled process

Oracle documents a cycle count workflow that separates selecting items, counting, variance review, approval and updating inventory.
